Naturopathic Acupuncture

What is Acupuncture?

Acupuncture is defined as “the insertion and removal of solid needles into specific points in the body for therapeutic purposes.” When performed by a qualified Naturopathic Doctor, it is considered a safe, effective modality that aims to support the body’s natural healing processes. By stimulating specific points, acupuncture may help address concerns like pain, stress, digestive issues, and more.

In Ontario, acupuncture is recognized as a controlled act, and Naturopathic Doctors are authorized to provide it through specialized training and adherence to professional standards set by the College of Naturopaths of Ontario. This ensures that each session is delivered ethically, with proper techniques and thorough attention to safety.

During your visit, we will assess whether acupuncture is a good fit for your individual health goals. If appropriate, we will develop a personalized plan that aligns with evidence-based approaches, your comfort level, and any other therapies you may be pursuing.

Who is it For?

Acupuncture can be a versatile, holistic approach for many health concerns. Whether you experience muscle tension, digestive discomfort, or stress-related issues, it may offer natural relief and support.

  • Acupuncture is often used to support a variety of health concerns, including chronic pain, headaches, digestive issues, hormonal imbalances, and stress-related conditions. It may also assist with sleep disturbances, fatigue, and musculoskeletal discomfort. Each treatment is tailored to your individual health goals, with an emphasis on improving overall function and well-being. If acupuncture is appropriate for your needs, we will develop a personalized treatment plan that aligns with your symptoms and overall health objectives.

  • Beyond addressing specific health concerns, acupuncture can be an effective tool for relaxation and stress management. By activating the body’s natural healing response, it helps regulate the nervous system, promoting a sense of calm, balance, and emotional resilience. Many patients find acupuncture deeply restorative, enhancing their ability to unwind, sleep better, and manage daily stressors more effectively.

  • While acupuncture is generally safe, certain conditions require extra caution or may not be suitable for treatment. These include bleeding disorders, pacemakers, pregnancy-related concerns, and active infections. Before each session, we carefully assess your health history to ensure a safe and effective treatment plan. For more details on who should take extra precautions, refer to our FAQ section.

Why see an ND for Acupuncture?

  • The attending Naturopathic Doctor is authorized by the College of Naturopaths of Ontario (CONO) to perform acupuncture. This authorization requires completion of specialized acupuncture training and ongoing professional development to maintain the highest standards of safety, competence, and clinical judgment.

    The practitioner is qualified to:

    • Assess and determine when acupuncture is an appropriate and beneficial treatment option.

    • Identify contraindications and modify care as needed when acupuncture may not be suitable.

    • Perform all needle insertions and related techniques in accordance with established clinical and hygiene standards.

    • Monitor and reassess patient progress throughout the course of treatment to ensure safe and effective outcomes.

All acupuncture procedures are personally performed by the Naturopathic Doctor. The controlled act is not delegated to other practitioners, ensuring continuity of care and a consistent, individualized approach under one qualified provider.

  • Before recommending acupuncture, the attending Naturopathic Doctor conducts a comprehensive intake and assessment to determine whether acupuncture is an appropriate and safe treatment for the patient’s specific needs. This process includes:

    • Health History: A review of the patient’s presenting concerns, medical history, and relevant lifestyle factors.

    • Risk–Benefit Analysis: Identification of any contraindications or conditions under which acupuncture may not be advisable, balanced against potential therapeutic benefits.

    • Personalized Treatment Plan: If acupuncture is deemed suitable, it is incorporated into an individualized care plan that may also include nutrition, lifestyle recommendations, or other naturopathic therapies.

    • Ongoing Monitoring: The patient’s progress and response are continually reassessed throughout the course of care. Treatment is adjusted as needed to ensure safety, effectiveness, and alignment with evolving health goals.

  • Safety and Infection Control

All acupuncture treatments are conducted in accordance with established infection control protocols and professional practice standards. The Naturopathic Doctor utilizes single-use, sterile needles for every procedure, and the clinical environment is maintained under strict cleaning, disinfection, and waste management protocols to ensure patient safety.

Patients are encouraged to communicate any concerns regarding needle sensation, treatment frequency, or potential side effects. All relevant information is discussed prior to and throughout the course of care to support informed decision-making and patient comfort.

At Rumi Naturopathic, we prioritize comfort and compassionate care in every acupuncture session, ensuring that each treatment is tailored to your unique needs. Our approach goes beyond just inserting needles—we create a calm, supportive environment where you feel heard, respected, and at ease.  FAQs

  • Acupuncture is generally very safe when performed by a qualified Naturopathic Doctor (or other trained/ certified healthcare provider) who follows proper sterilization and needling techniques. You can expect minimal discomfort, and most patients find the sessions relaxing.

  • Many patients report a gentle pressure or mild tingling. The needles are thin and sterile, and most people find they can relax once they’ve adjusted to the sensation.

  • The number of sessions varies depending on your specific health concern and progress. Your naturopath will reassess regularly and adjust the treatment plan so that each visit remains both safe and clinically relevant.

  • Acupuncture may support a range of concerns, from muscle tension and headaches, hormonal issues to digestive issues. Your practitioner will recommend it only when it’s likely to be effective and will discuss any other therapies that might be beneficial.

  • Each appointment is unique, and your treatment plan changes based on ongoing assessment. Charging on a per-visit basis ensures you only pay for sessions that are necessary, reinforcing ethical billing and patient-centered care.

  • It’s helpful to wear comfortable clothing and avoid an empty stomach beforehand. Let your naturopath know if there have been any changes in your health or medications since your last visit.

  • Below is a general (but not exhaustive) list of patient groups and circumstances that typically require additional safety evaluation before proceeding with acupuncture.

Individual cases may vary, and practitioners should use their professional judgment alongside any College of Naturopaths of Ontario guidelines:

    1. Individuals with Bleeding Disorders or on Anticoagulant Medication

      • Conditions such as hemophilia or use of blood thinners (e.g., warfarin, heparin) increase the risk of bleeding and bruising.

    2. Pregnant or Potentially Pregnant Individuals

      • Certain acupuncture points and techniques are contraindicated during pregnancy; a tailored approach is necessary for safe treatment.

    3. Immunocompromised Patients

      • Those with significantly lowered immunity (e.g., due to HIV, chemotherapy, or immunosuppressant drugs) may require extra precautions to prevent infection or complications.

    4. Patients with Implanted Medical Devices (e.g., Pacemakers)

      • Especially relevant if electroacupuncture is considered; electromagnetic interference can affect certain devices.

    5. Severe Needle Phobia or Extreme Anxiety

      • Patients who experience intense fear, panic attacks, or inability to tolerate needles may require a modified approach or referral.

    6. Active Skin Infections or Open Wounds

      • Needles should not be inserted in or near infected or broken skin, and alternative therapies may be considered until the area is healed.

    7. Severe or Unstable Health Conditions

      • This can include uncontrolled diabetes, unstable cardiovascular disease, or serious respiratory conditions. Acupuncture might still be possible but requires careful monitoring.

    8. Acute Illness, High Fever, or Serious Infection

      • Patients presenting with acute conditions (e.g., severe flu, pneumonia) may need to address the primary illness first before safe acupuncture can be provided.

    9. Complex Neurological or Sensory Deficits

      • Reduced or absent sensation can affect feedback on needle placement and discomfort levels, necessitating extra care.

    10. Children or Very Elderly/Frail Patients

    • Extra caution with depth, duration, and technique is often required; consultation or specialized training in pediatric/geriatric acupuncture may be advisable.

    Disclaimer:
This list is a guideline and does not replace a thorough individual assessment. Each patient’s unique history, presentation, and current state of health must be evaluated by a qualified practitioner who abides by the College of Naturopaths of Ontario standards and any other applicable regulations. If a higher level of risk is identified, the practitioner should consider referral, modification of the acupuncture approach, or alternate treatments as needed.
